Summing up the third NGFP online course

In March-April 2006, during the five weeks preceding Passover, The Passover Haggadah was offered by Prof. Avigdor Shinan, professor of Midrash at Hebrew University, Jerusalem. Participants in the online course included Nahum Goldmann Fellowship alumni, readers of Jewish Heritage Online Magazine and of several Jewish educational listserves.

Participants were from the US, the UK, Israel, Guatamala, Australia, Switzerland, Russia, Germany, Netherlands, England, Canada, Croatia. Thanks to both the active contributors and the silent auditors. We will incorporate some of the suggestions we gleaned from your evaluation forms in future courses.

The five-week course was structured around five passages:
Lesson 1: Ha Lachma Anya – This is the Bread of Affliction: the Aramaic passage that opens the Haggadah.
Lesson 2: Verses that call for the destruction of the enemy “Shefoch Hamatcha” – Pour your Wrath.
Lesson 3: The group of verses were included from Sefer Devarim, the book of Deuteronomy: Arami Oved Avi (My father was a wandering Aramean and so forth).
Lesson 4: Ehad mi Yodea? Who Knows One?
Lesson 5: The famous story of the wise sages gathered in Bnei Brak

Some of the course participants have requested a review of the online discussions. These may be viewed online at: http://lists.ngfp.org/pipermail/ngfp-bookclub

On behalf of those of us who organized the course, the Memorial Foundation staff, and most certainly in the name of all those who participated, we want to give a heart-felt thanks to Prof. Shinan for leading such an illuminating course. Based on the feedback we have received from both active and silent participants, he succeeded in making the course interesting, enjoyable and a true educational experience.

Any other comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
