Summing up the first NGFP online course
The Modern Jewish Canon: A Journey
Through Language and Literature offered by
Prof. Ruth Wisse, Professor of Yiddish Literature and Comparative
Literature at Harvard University.
Sholem Aleichem: Tevye the Dairyman
Franz Kafka: The Trial
Isaac Babel, Red Cavalry
Saul Bellow, Mr. Sammler's Planet
Haim Sabato, Adjusting Sights
On behalf of those of us who organized the course, the Memorial
Foundation staff, and most certainly in the name of all those
who participated, we want to give a heart-felt thanks to Dr.
Wisse for leading such a fascinating and wonderful course.
Despite the strangeness of this new medium, based on our reader's
response, you have succeeded in making the course interesting,
enjoyable and a true educational experience.
We have had people from all over the world participate including
the US,
the UK, Slovak Republic, Singapore, New Zealand, Israel, Italy,
Holland,
Germany, Canada and Australia. The diversity of countries
reflects the
diversity of the Jewish world today and was also reflected
in the
diversity of authors and books we read. Yet our common identity
ties us
together across both time and space.
Thanks to all the people who participated at any level. We
hope to see
you all in a future course.
One last administrative reminder. For those readers who didn't
want to fill out the full evaluation form, particularly the
"passive" participants, it would be of great help
to us if you send us a short note indicating how often you
read the emails sent out, if at all. Any other
comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
